Greetings Alum,
Although it has been awhile since you last strolled the terrazo floors of HCS, I still hear the faint footsteps of many of my former students. Some occasionally come by to pick up transcripts, update us on their comings and goings, or just simply say hello. The big news of late is of course the addition of an entire wing to the north end of the 1935 building. By the way, the floors in the new building are no longer made of terrazo. You ought to come by and give it a look, the building that is. Other things have not changed. Dave Winter still speaks in riddles. Cathy Wittkamper still insists on doing Word Clues. Pastor Cady persists in instructing young people in wise gardening methods. I still am amazed that I see some of you after you had to endure me as a teacher. I also am still in the old "1935 compound"
The feature that remains, and ought to remain, in spite of the visible changes here at HCS is our vision. The goal of training young people for service in the Kingdom of Christ is still at the front of what we seek to do. The challenges of achieving that do not get easier as the years pass. Some obstacles for Christian Education fade but other challenges persist.
Over the past couple of years a few of the old guard have been wondering about the alumni component of Heritage. I suppose, due to my longevity here and growing sentimentality about the past it is an entirely natural thing to do so. We have speculated that we have not been particularly adept at maintaining the connections with you. We seek to alter that. It seems that there are a couple of immediate and relatively easy things we both can do to change this. Recently we have been having some school awareness meetings, they're called ED-FEST. We have them a couple of times a year and prospective families come in to check us out. You should come in and say hello. Secondly, we have initiated a fall homecoming. The past couple of years we have utilized the Wisconsin Lutheran facilities for all of the festivities. Come by and see us there as well. Reunions are also an opportunity to catch up with us. It is our hope to link up classes readily via a web-based connection through our website. The class of 1987 and 1997 are tuning up for their reunions this summer.
The more ambitious agenda for maintaining an alumni connection are a bit more long-term in nature. We think that the development of a service mentoring program that would link current students with alumni is an idea worth considering. Many schools around the nation are doing this and we ought to as well. Also, it might be possible to use alumni as club/extra-curricular advisors. There has to be a wealth of interests that you have developed in your lives that could be the basis of connecting with students with similar interests.
As the spring rapidly approaches and time gets more precious since we can actually move about easily without the seven layers of thermal wear, I would ask you to consider reconnecting with us. Even if it means a sinple email through the school website, we would love to hear from you. The site has plenty of info regarding the events of the school year, the athletic schedules, the programs, plays, the jog-a-thon.
An aspect of effective ministry is without a doubt doing that ministry within the context of a community. As an alum, you are a part of that community. Consider helping us do this part of our mission more effectively.
