The Difference Our Students Make
The term “servant leaders” sounds like a good marketing phrase for a Christian school.  Certainly most people like the humility of a servant and the potential of a leader.  At Heritage, we are seeing these words making a real difference in the lives of our students, and in the world we are seeking to engage.
An email we received recently from a Heritage Parent Ana Cheng gave an interesting perspective on a service project at Heritage.  She was commenting on the gift boxes we prepare as part of Operation Christmas Child.  Our elementary students fill these presents with things that would bring joy to a child in a third world country, accompanied with the good news of the gospel.
Ana’s parents are missionaries in Mexico, a country that receives many of these boxes from Operation Christmas Child.  While it was not specifically boxes from Heritage that they saw arriving in their part of the country, Ana said her parents were able to deliver 150 boxes to a little village in a rural zone high in the mountains where few people go to bring help and share the gospel.
Not only were the children in that village delighted with the presents, but they and their parents heard a clear presentation of the gospel, and 25 families, both children and parents, accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
Did we sacrifice some academic time when we gathered materials, filled boxes, and prepared them to for shipping?  Yes.  But how do we calculate the value that comes when our students understand that it is more blessed to give than to receive?
The impact of service projects like these live on, not just in the lives of those who are served, but also in the hearts of our servant leaders.
