It Doesn’t Matter
I had a teacher in high school whose most common answer to a question was, “I don’t care.”  He was an older guy waiting for retirement and seemingly going through the motions.
A lack of caring doesn’t seem to be our greatest problem today.  To the contrary, we care too much.  Unfortunately, we care about too many things that don’t matter.
How often do we get all worked up and anxious about things over which we have no control?  This can boil down to silly disagreements over things like whether the weather app is accurate or not.  Will we really get 5 inches of snow as they predict, or just a dusting?  Does the app really know what it is talking about?
I think about these types of conversations and how I spent time and energy building my position on the science of meteorological predictions when it didn’t matter.  At times, I got angry because someone didn’t agree with my ignorant take on the topic.
However, the biggest problem is not the wasted time and unneeded strife.  We only have a limited number of precious moments on this earth – why would we waste our time focused on lesser things while greater things of eternal importance are shoved aside?
Politics, social media, television news – all these time suckers urge us to take passionate stances on issues in which we play no part.  What would happen if we gave that attention to our spouses and children instead?  What if we thought deeply and chose to get passionate about the things that matter most and over which we do have control?
It’s as simple as this: stop talking (or texting), step back, and ask if the issue at hand is really important.  If it doesn’t really matter, let it go.
