The Most Important Win
Our boys’ varsity basketball team has been enjoying a phenomenal season.  Going into our game with Lake Country Lutheran on Tuesday night, we had a record of 21-1 with just two games left on our schedule. We have every reason to expect that the team will go deep in the state tournament.  Does this meet our standard for success?
We don’t want to over-spiritualize things, but we also don’t want to ignore the bigger issues that are taking place on our sports teams at Heritage.  Jesus asked the question, “…what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36)  We might ask the question, “What good is it if we go undefeated, win our conference, and capture the state championship, yet fail to help our athletes become the young men and women God created them to be?”
Certainly, there is nothing wrong with performing well in sports.  There is actually something very good about it – it helps our students learn discipline, pursue excellence, and become team players.  When these traits combine with basic skills taught well by wise coaches, the team should win as many games as its talent is capable of winning.
However, the most important thing a coach at Heritage can teach our players is to wholeheartedly love God and love others as God has loved them.  That’s the difference between a truly Christian school and a school that just happens to have “Christian” in the wording of its name.
Concerning our boys’ team, I’m thankful to say that Coach Demonte Bynum has that big picture right.  We see his players growing spiritually.  The most successful teams seek first the kingdom of God, and all the wins are added as a bonus!
