Rejoicing in Adversity
Last week, we looked at the way Christians deal with circumstances, especially when bad things happen.  How do we see problems differently than unbelievers?  What difference does that make in our homes? How do our children interpret our attitudes and words?
O how easy it is to just get mad and grumpy when the rug is pulled out from under us due to forces beyond our control.  Last week the message was basically: Don’t complain.  Let’s go farther and consider the huge upside of choosing joy.
James 1:2-4 says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” What happens when we choose to find joy in our trials?
God has a purpose in what He is doing in our lives.  Many layers of good things can come from what He is doing, but the first domino to fall is our choice in how to respond.  If we decide to believe in the good He is doing and therefore rejoice, we pass the test of faith and grow.  That’s our great benefit.
The next big thing is people start paying attention.  Complainers are everywhere, but those who celebrate a greater good beyond their pain instantly get attention.  We can say we are Christians and even quote Bible verses, but our response to adversity speaks louder.
At Heritage, we want to see the lives of our students transformed for God.  Going through the motions of Christianity won’t cut it.  When children see their teachers and parents praising God, even in the most difficult times, we have their attention and the stage is set for their significant growth!
